Quick AI Visibility Fixes to Win More Referrals

Before I refer anyone, I look them up. After all, my reputation is also on the line.

I tend to start with LinkedIn, because an active profile helps me get to know someone better. Then I ask AI what it can tell me about the person. Checking both helps me see whether the person I met in the room matches the person I find online.

Every referral network I belong to, from ProVisors to my local Chamber, runs on know, like, and trust. Know and like begin in person. Trust gets vetted online, and your AI visibility shapes what people find.

How AI Visibility Changes Vetting

A few years ago, looking someone up meant scanning their LinkedIn profile or their firm’s website. You often formed your own impression.

AI has changed how that impression forms. When someone asks AI models like ChatGPT or Gemini about you, the answer draws on whatever is publicly visible: parts of your LinkedIn profile, your website, articles, and podcast appearances. AI turns all of it into a few sentences, and you don’t get to choose which sources it uses.

If the summary comes back thin, outdated, or at odds with what you told the room, the referral may stall and you may not get traction.

My Referral Check

When I look at what comes back, I ask five questions.

  1. Does what I find match what you told me? If you introduced yourself as a business succession attorney and AI describes a general practice firm you left three years ago, I pause. A mismatch makes me wonder which version is current.
  2. Can I quickly tell what you do and who you serve? I need to explain you to my client in one sentence. When I can’t tell which problem you solve, my job gets harder.
  3. Is there recent proof of your work? An article, a talk, a client story, or a post from the last year tells me you stay active in your field. If the latest thing I can find dates to 2021, I’m left guessing.
  4. Does anyone besides you vouch for your expertise? Recommendations, reviews, press mentions, speaking engagements, and published articles carry more weight than your own description of yourself.
  5. Would I feel comfortable if my client looked you up? My client may run the same search I did, and I want what they find to back up my introduction.

When Someone Doesn’t Pass

If someone doesn’t pass, I hesitate. When a client needs help, I tend to refer the person I can vouch for most easily, and in a busy category, that may be someone else.

I suspect many referral partners work the same way, so you may not hear about the referrals you missed.

Quick Actions to Improve Your AI Visibility

None of the fixes require becoming a content creator.

  1. Check your LinkedIn. Make sure your profile is public and your headline is consistent with your business.
  2. Add recent proof, such as an article, a talk, or a case study.
  3. Collect third-party validation. Ask two or three clients or colleagues for LinkedIn recommendations or Google reviews.
  4. Get your free AI Visibility Score. See how AI rates you on Authority, Clarity, Consistency, and Discoverability, and where your biggest gap sits, in about 60 seconds.
  5. Upgrade for the full picture. The $19 report shows what five AI models say about you (Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Grok), with recommended fixes and ProfileLift to optimize your LinkedIn profile.

Make the Referral Easy

Your referral partners want to send business to people they trust. When what they find online matches what they see in person, a referral feels safe to make. Make it easy for them to say yes.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is AI visibility?

AI visibility describes how clearly AI represents you when someone asks about you. AI draws on publicly available sources, such as parts of your LinkedIn profile, your website, articles, and reviews, and turns them into a short summary.

How does AI visibility affect referrals?

Before people refer you, many look you up, and more often now, they ask AI. If the summary comes back thin, outdated, or inconsistent with how you present yourself, a referral partner may hesitate and send the business to someone easier to vouch for.

Can AI read my LinkedIn profile?

Partly. AI tools generally can’t access full LinkedIn profiles, but they often pick up public parts, such as your headline and current role, through search results. A public profile with a headline consistent with your business gives AI the right signals.
